We've been getting pretty excited about our upcoming road trip to Maine--excited not just for the cookouts, lake swimming, and Acadia camping we've got planned, but for our chosen mode of transportation. In preparation for our three days out there and three days back (we'll be making more than the occasional touristy detour) we've been catching up on some reading.
The 1958 two volume Ford Treasury of Station Wagon Living is
undoubtedly the best find of the summer. I've been drooling over the
incredible shade screens, the Japanese-style Beach Accessories, and the
modular amazingness in the back of each wagon. That station wagon
traveling is considered a thing of the past is nothing short of a
travesty (plus, anyone who likes to scavenge/thrift as much as we do is
always finding major space issues with flying--consider this problem
solved). While our own Chevy wagon is lacking in 50's charm, we're hoping
to make up for it with some inspiration we've been getting:
I'll be sewing some similar privacy screens pronto (and stealing a couple of small children to make my vintage dream complete).
I came across volume 2 a number of years ago at my little local thrift store and quickly bought volume 1 off the internet. They are two of my most favorite possessions. After family and photos, I think they're what I'd grab next in an emergency evacuation. Totally happy-making.
